SUMMARY:Day of Prayer for Peace
DESCRIPTION:Catholics are being encouraged to say a prayer and light a candle for peace on Tuesday 7 October. \nIn a pastoral letter\, Bishop John Keenan writes: “”Our world today is troubled by so many wars and conflicts; it is appropriate that we as Catholics pray individually and together on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary for the Holy Land\, Gaza and Israel. \n“Pope Leo has also asked all Catholics to pray the Rosary during the month of October for peace in our world.” \nA prayer for peace\nGod of peace and justice\,\nWe pray for the people of the Holy Land:\nIsraeli and Palestinian\, Jew\, Christian and Muslim.\nWe pray for an end to acts of violence and terror.\nWe lift to you all who are fearful and hurting.\nWe ask for wisdom and compassion for those in leadership.\nAbove all\, we ask that Jesus the Prince of Peace\,\nEstablish lasting reconciliation and justice for the Holy Land and all nations. Amen. \nRead more here

SUMMARY:Silent no More: A North Korean Testimony
DESCRIPTION:Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) host a North Korean defector in Scotland next month to share his story of Christian persecution. \nTimothy Cho is a North Korean human rights activist and two-time defector\, who has found refuge in the UK and now advocates for religious freedom around the world. \nSilent No More: A North Korean Testimony will see Timothy share his remarkable journey\, discussing how faith has shaped his path and what life is like for Christians in North Korea. The evening at St Joseph’s Clarkston will shine a light on a subject which rarely makes the news agenda in this country. \nIt is even rarer for a Christian from North Korea to be able to share their gripping story first-hand\, making this an event like no other for those in Scotland. \nTimothy was born during the 1980s and endured the infamous Great Famine\, which resulted in 3.5 million deaths across the nation. \nCho managed to flee to China when he was a teenager; however\, he was soon deported back and was immediately sent to a detention centre\, where there was extreme overcrowding. \nIncredibly\, Cho was sent to the Philippines rather than North Korea. Many would see such an event as an act of God. From there\, Cho eventually made it to the United Kingdom. \nTimothy attributes his survival to God and since arriving in the UK he has deepened his Christian faith\, advocating for persecuted Christians around the world. \nNow\, in a one-off event hosted by ACN Scotland\, you will have the chance to hear Timothy’s powerful witness in Christ. \nWilliam More\, Manager of Operations in Scotland\, said: “In one of the most closed and oppressive regimes in the world\, simply believing in God can cost you everything. Join us for an extraordinary evening as a North Korean dissident shares his powerful personal story of faith\, suffering and survival under a regime that demands total allegiance to its supreme leader. \n“In a land where Christianity is outlawed and the faithful are driven underground\, Timothy’s testimony offers a rare glimpse into the courage of those who risk their lives to hold onto their belief in Christ. This is a one-off event – it is a witness to truth\, a call to solidarity and a reminder of the price of faith in places where freedom is just a dream. \n“Don’t miss this opportunity to hear a voice that was never meant to be heard.” \nSilent No More takes place at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Clarkston on 10th September from 7pm to 9pm. Reserve your free ticket now at https://www.trybooking.com/uk/FDYV. For more information\, please contact the ACN Scotland office at scotland@acnuk.org by calling 01698 337 470. SUMMARY:Catholic Social Teaching and AI
DESCRIPTION:St Mary’s in Scotland is delighted to share its upcoming conference on AI\, emerging technologies\, and Catholic Social thought\, sponsored by the Catholic Union of Great Britain and by Churches\, Charities and Local Authorities (CCLA) Investment Management Limited. \nEver since Rerum Novarum in 1891\, the Church has\, through her official teaching\, presented the world with the key social principles required in order to properly discern how to order society towards the kingdom of God. \nWritten on the backdrop of a changing social landscape in the west as a result of technology\, Pope Leo realised that the impact technology has on society would require spiritual intervention\, and the same is true today. \nWith the popular emergence of generative AI and the wider implementation of autonomous systems\, there is an urgent need to discuss what impact these technologies have on society\, through a deep reflection with Catholic Social Thought – an urgency noted by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith’s document Antiqua Et Nova. \nPlease register on Eventbrite. Questions? Please email stephen.dolan@stmarys.ac.uk \nThis event is organised by St Mary’s University.
