SUMMARY:The Calix Society - Talk on Life of Venerable Matt Talbot
DESCRIPTION:The Calix Society is an association of Catholic Alcoholics\, promoting the virtue of daily abstinence and the spiritual development of its members. It meets on the first Saturday of the month at 1:30pm\, following the 12:30pm Mass at St Patrick’s Church in The Cowgate\, Edinburgh. It hosts a talk on Matt Talbot on Saturday 7 March at 1:30pm in St Patrick’s Church in The Cowgate. \nJoin them for prayer\, fellowship and refreshments. \n\n\nAbout Matt Talbot\n\n\nBorn into poverty\, Talbot began drinking excessively at age 12 while working for a wine merchant. By 13\, he was a confirmed alcoholic and spent 16 years squandering his wages on drink\, even pawning his boots for alcohol.\nIn 1884\, at age 28\, a penniless Talbot was ignored by his drinking friends outside a pub. Disgusted\, he returned home and told his mother he was going to “take the pledge“—a solemn promise to abstain from alcohol.\nHe maintained sobriety for the remaining 41 years of his life through a rigorous regime of daily Mass\, prayer\, and penance. He was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order (Third Order) and became a self-taught student of theology and mysticism\nEvent organised by the The Calix Society. Email calixedinburgh@gmail.com

SUMMARY:World Day of Prayer 2026
DESCRIPTION:The annual World Day of Prayer take place on Friday 6 March. \nIt is a global ecumenical movement led by Christian women who welcome you to join in prayer and action for peace and justice. \nThere are services across Scotland on the 6 March. Find a service near you here and search for services in your area. More information at www.wdpscotland.org.uk. \nThe service for 2026 was written by a group of ecumenical Nigerian Christian women. Nigeria has a population of over 211 million with over 250 ethnic groups; the three largest are the Hausa-Fulani\, Yoruba and Igbo. Christianity is a major religious influence. \nThe writers of this service call us to find rest in God. \nThe women explore different kinds of burden to help us understand both the weight of human suffering and the depths of divine compassion for those who are weary. T \nhree women share their stories speaking to us about the suffering of widows\, the shadow of religious persecution and the burdens of poverty which can bring despair. Their experiences show us how God provides rest through support from their community and their faith and hope in God. \nThe World Day of Prayer is for everyone – men\, women and young people. \nA warm welcome awaits you at your local service\, and you are invited to share your faith\, joy and hopes. \n
