SUMMARY:The Calix Society - Talk on Life of Venerable Matt Talbot
DESCRIPTION:The Calix Society is an association of Catholic Alcoholics\, promoting the virtue of daily abstinence and the spiritual development of its members. It meets on the first Saturday of the month at 1:30pm\, following the 12:30pm Mass at St Patrick’s Church in The Cowgate\, Edinburgh. It hosts a talk on Matt Talbot on Saturday 7 March at 1:30pm in St Patrick’s Church in The Cowgate. \nJoin them for prayer\, fellowship and refreshments. \n\n\nAbout Matt Talbot\n\n\nBorn into poverty\, Talbot began drinking excessively at age 12 while working for a wine merchant. By 13\, he was a confirmed alcoholic and spent 16 years squandering his wages on drink\, even pawning his boots for alcohol.\nIn 1884\, at age 28\, a penniless Talbot was ignored by his drinking friends outside a pub. Disgusted\, he returned home and told his mother he was going to “take the pledge“—a solemn promise to abstain from alcohol.\nHe maintained sobriety for the remaining 41 years of his life through a rigorous regime of daily Mass\, prayer\, and penance. SUMMARY:Christian Aid Book Sale
DESCRIPTION:Edinburgh New Town Church hosts the annual Christian Aid Book Sale from 09-15 May. \nA team of stalwarts and people from various Christian denominations are organising this sale that has taken place every year for the past five decades\, all in celebration of Christian Aid Week which takes place every May.\n\nLast year\, they raised over £56\,000 and are hoping to raise a lot of money this time round\, too.\n\nThe event will sell a range of books varying from theology\, politics and culture to biographies\, sports and science. It will also feature a whole Christian section.\n \nAnyone going to the book sale will have the opportunity to grab a hot drink at on-site cafe.\n\nFrom Monday 27 April\, the donation of books and other items will be welcomed by the team. The organisers are also looking for people who are able to assist in pricing theology books.\n\nThe Christian Aid Book Sale will be held at Edinburgh New Town Church\, 13 George Street\, and can be attended from 12pm-6pm from 9-15 May (closed Monday 11 May). SUMMARY:Mass for the anniversary of the death of Fr Norman Cooper
DESCRIPTION:Fr Norman Cooper is a fondly remembered priest of our Archdiocese who tragically fell to his death on 20 May 1996 climbing in the Sgurr Nan Gillean (Peak of the Young Men) in the Cuillins in Skye\, while away for a short midweek break in Applecross with fellow priests (David Gemmell\, Gerry Hand\, Gordon Muchall and Jock Dalrymple).  \nThe article photo was taken on the day of his death. He is pictured with Fr Gemmell and Elspeth McPartlin (her father\, Dr Gerry McPartlin\, took the photo). \nNorman was born in Falkirk in 1955\, one of five brothers. He went to St Mungo’s High School\, and studied at St Andrew’s College\, Drygrange\, before being ordained priest at St Anthony’s\, Polmont\, in 1980. \n \nHe was then assistant priest at St John’s Portobello (1980-82)\, St Francis Xavier’s\, Falkirk (1982-5) and St Mary’s Cathedral (1985-1988) before further studies at the Catholic University of America (out of which he emerged as a Doctor of Ministry and as the author of a book ‘Collaborative Ministry’.  \nOn his return to the diocese\, he served in the Borders and briefly Tranent\, as well acting as a consultant on Pastoral Planning. \nThe 30th anniversary of his death will be marked with a Mass open to anybody who wishes to celebrate the life of\, and pray for\, a fine and enthusiastic human being and priest at 7:00pm on Wednesday 20 May at St John’s\, Portobello.

It is titled ‘Ireland’s Pope: Cardinal Paul Cullen and the making of Irish Catholicism’. \n\nIt takes place on Thursday 4 June 2026 at 5:15pm in the Teviot Lecture Theatre\, Doorway 5\, Old Medical School\, Teviot Place\, Edinburgh EH8 9AG. Free entry. \n\n\n\n\nProf. Barr’s work seeks to place the history of the island of Ireland and its peoples in the widest possible context\, including that of the United Kingdom\, Europe\, the Roman Catholic Church\, and the global Irish Diaspora.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Barr is the author or editor of a number of books\, including ‘Ireland’s Empire: The Roman Catholic Church in the English-speaking World\, 1829-1914’ (Cambridge University Press\, 2020).  ‘The Irish Pope: Paul Cullen\, 1803-1878’\, will be published by Cambridge University Press shortly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Justin Arbuthnott Trust was founded by friends and family of Justin Arbuthnott\, an Edinburgh University History student who was drowned along with three friends one night in July 1989 when their boat capsized off the coast near County Donegal in Ireland. It provides a postgraduate scholarship each year and this lecture\, both of which are designed to promote the better understanding of Ireland and various complex relationships which link Ireland and and various complex relationships which link Ireland and Britain. \n\n\n\n\n\nPrevious lectures have been given by Professor Diarmaid Ferriter MRIA (University College Dublin)\, Adrian O’Neill\, Ireland’s Ambassador to the UK\, Professor Mary E. Daly on ‘Independence and sovereignty – rhetoric and reality; the Irish story’\, and Professor Tom Bartlett on ‘The Irish at war – and some of their historians’. \nThis event is organised by the University of Edinburgh.

DESCRIPTION:Join Archbishop Cushley and people from across the Archdiocese for the annual Corpus Christi Procession. \nIt takes place at Our Lady & St Andrew’s\, Stirling Street\, Galashiels\, at 3:00pm on Sunday 7 June 2026. \nThis annual event is a beautiful\, public celebration of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.  All welcome! \nSchedule \n1:00pm: Exposition of Blessed Sacrament (in the church). \n2:00pm: Confessions (in the church). \n3:00pm: Procession begins from Our Lady & St Andrew’s Church. \nDetails \n\nGather in the car park of Anderson’s Chambers\, next to the church car park.\n\n\nArchbishop Cushley will begin the procession at 3:00pm from Our Lady & St Andrew’s Church\, along with clergy\, first holy communicants and their parents (we encourage first communicants to wear their First Holy Communion clothes.\n\n\nArchbishop Leo Cushley will carry the Blessed Sacrament under a canopy carried by the Knights of St Columba.\n\n\nStewards will guide the procession along the route\, which is along pavements with some road crossings.\n\nThe route \nGather outside the church in the car park of Anderson’s Chambers\, next to the church car park. \n\nThe route follows the pavement along Market Street towards Cornmill Square and Bank Street.  The procession crosses the road at the traffic lights in Bank Sreett to go over to Bank Street Gardens.  In Bank St Gardens there will be a short sermon and blessing.  The procession will then continue along the pavement on the gardens side towards the High Street.  It will cross the road at the traffic lights into Channel Street which is largely pedestrianised.  It will then turn towards the pedestrian Douglas Bridge which crosses the Gala Water and back to the Church. \nAt the Church \nWhen the procession concludes\, Solemn Benediction will take place in the church.  This is expected to last about 10 minutes. After that\, all pilgrims and parishioners are invited to the presbytery garden for tea and refreshments. \nGetting there \nThe Church address: Our Lady and St Andrew’s Church\, Stirling Street\, Galashiels TD1 1BY. \n\nTrains (To Tweedbank) leave Edinburgh Waverley every half hour and take just under 1 hour.  Galashiels station is a five-minute walk to the church.  The Bus station is beside the train station.\n\n\nBuses. Galashiels is well served by regional bus routes\n\nMost buses stop at Galashiels Transport Interchange\, just a short walk from the venue.  Check local timetable with Borders Buses or Traveline Scotland for up to date routes and times. \n\nCars   Galashiels is easily accessible via the A7 and A72.\n\nFrom Edinburgh: Follow the A7 south (appx 1 hour 15 minutes). \nFrom Carlisle: Take the A7 north (appx 1 hour 45 minutes). \nCar and bus Parking \nThere is a bus and car park on Currie Road\, about a 10-minute walk back to the Church. \n\nNote \nClergy: Clergy are most welcome to join the procession in choir. \nFirst Holy Communicants: especially invited with their parents and may wear their First Holy Communion formal clothes (weather permitting) and take a special place in the procession. \nWeather: Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. \nTea/refreshments: Edibles will not be allergy-free. \nToilets: There will be WCs in the car park right next to the church. \nDetailed Route Map \n\nQuick-guide PDF available here. Queries? please email matthew.meade@staned.org.uk
