SUMMARY:Justin Arbuthnott Lecture 2026
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Arbuthnott Lecture will be given by Professor Colin Barr (University of Notre Dame). It is titled ‘Ireland’s Pope: Cardinal Paul Cullen and the making of Irish Catholicism’. \n\nIt takes place on Thursday 4 June 2026 at 5:15pm in the Teviot Lecture Theatre\, Doorway 5\, Old Medical School\, Teviot Place\, Edinburgh EH8 9AG. Free entry. \n\n\n\n\nProf. Barr’s work seeks to place the history of the island of Ireland and its peoples in the widest possible context\, including that of the United Kingdom\, Europe\, the Roman Catholic Church\, and the global Irish Diaspora.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Barr is the author or editor of a number of books\, including ‘Ireland’s Empire: The Roman Catholic Church in the English-speaking World\, 1829-1914’ (Cambridge University Press\, 2020).  ‘The Irish Pope: Paul Cullen\, 1803-1878’\, will be published by Cambridge University Press shortly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Justin Arbuthnott Trust was founded by friends and family of Justin Arbuthnott\, an Edinburgh University History student who was drowned along with three friends one night in July 1989 when their boat capsized off the coast near County Donegal in Ireland. It provides a postgraduate scholarship each year and this lecture\, both of which are designed to promote the better understanding of Ireland and various complex relationships which link Ireland and and various complex relationships which link Ireland and Britain. \n\n\n\n\n\nPrevious lectures have been given by Professor Diarmaid Ferriter MRIA (University College Dublin)\, Adrian O’Neill\, Ireland’s Ambassador to the UK\, Professor Mary E. Daly on ‘Independence and sovereignty – rhetoric and reality; the Irish story’\, and Professor Tom Bartlett on ‘The Irish at war – and some of their historians’. \nThis event is organised by the University of Edinburgh.

SUMMARY:Archdiocesan Corpus Christi Procession
DESCRIPTION:Join Archbishop Cushley for the Archdiocesan Corpus Christi Procession at Our Lady & St Andrew’s\, Stirling Street\, Galashiels\, at 3:00pm on Sunday 7 June 2026. \nAfterwards there will be Benediction in the Church followed by refreshments in the presbytery garden. This annual event is a beautiful\, public celebration of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. \nThe procession will begin from the church at 3:00pm. \nFirst Holy Communicants are especially invited and may wear their First Holy Communion formal clothes to take a special place in the procession. Clergy are most welcome to join the procession in choir. \nThere will be a celebration in the parish gardens following the procession to which everyone is invited. \nGetting there\nVenue: Our Lady & St Andrew’s ChurchAddress: Stirling Street\, Galashiels\, TD1 1BY \nBy Car\nGalashiels is easily accessible via the A7 and A72: \n\nFrom Edinburgh: Follow the A7 south (approx. 1 hour 15 minutes)\nFrom Carlisle: Take the A7 north (approx. 1 hour 45 minutes)\n\nThere is limited on-street parking near the church\, with additional public parking available in nearby town centre car parks. \nBy Bus\nGalashiels is well served by regional bus routes: \n\nRegular services connect Galashiels with Edinburgh\, Melrose\, Selkirk\, and other Borders towns.\nMost buses stop at Galashiels Transport Interchange\, just a short walk (around 5–10 minutes) from the venue.\n\nCheck local timetables with Borders Buses or Traveline Scotland for up-to-date routes and times. \nBy Train\nGalashiels is on the Borders Railway: \n\nDirect trains run from Edinburgh Waverley to Galashiels Railway Station (journey time approx. 55 minutes).\nThe station is a 5 minute walk from the venue.\n\nOn Foot\nFrom the town centre or transport interchange\, the venue is within easy walking distance. SUMMARY:Edinburgh Seven Hills Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:Starting at St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral York Place at 8:45am with the Pilgrimage beginning at 9:00am. Meet at the front steps. \nFollowing the success of the 2025 Lenten Seven Hills Pilgrimage\, the Cathedral brings you a new journey with a familiar route. The walk will be led spiritually by Fr Jeremy\, with a dedicated reflection at each peak.  \nThe Seven Hills of Edinburgh is approximately 26km\, taking in Castle Hill\, Costorphine Hill\, Criaglochart Hill\, Braid Hill\, Blackford Hill\, Arthur’s Seat\, Calton Hill.  \nThe journey is expected to last around 10 Hours. The route is close to various major bus routes\, so whether you want to join them on the route or journey home after part way\, this is entirely your pilgrimage. The procession will feature pupils\, teachers\, clergy\, the Knights of St Columba\, The Order of Malta and The Scottish Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. \n3:00pm: Holy Mass\nSt Margaret’s Memorial Church\, East Port\, KY12 7JB\, celebrated by Archbishop Cushley and priests of the Archdiocese. \n\n\n\nGetting there \nTrain: Dunfermline City Station\, St Margaret’s Drive\, KY12 7HT \nServices run via the Fife Circle Line with regular direct connections from Edinburgh Waverley (approx. 50–60 minutes depending on service). Serves speciality coffee\, light lunches\, and baked goods. \nBackground \nThe roots of the summer pilgrimage date back to June 1250 when the relics of Saint Margaret were translated to a new shrine in Dunfermline Abbey following her canonisation by Pope Innocent IV. \nA pilgrimage to Dunfermline soon emerged and continued until the late 16th Century. It was then resurrected in 1899 and continued again until 1974. \nArchbishop Cushley revived it in 2015 and it has continued since then\, except a hiatus due to the pandemic. \nWeather \nPlease check the forecast before setting out – most of the events are outdoors.
