Romero and Ukraine - Resilience in the Face of Injustice

Take part in a thought-provoking evening at Edinburgh’s Jesuit Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where a relic of Saint Oscar Romero is safely held.

Together, by celebrating his work, beliefs, and courage, we can keep his legacy alive.

Archbishop St Oscar Romero, the outspoken advocate for justice and non-violence in his native El Salvador, has long inspired Christians around the whole world.

On March 24, 1980, he was murdered - shot by an assassin while celebrating Mass, the day after he had appealed to the state’s military to stop their brutal repression of the poor.

This Romero Lecture is hosted by Edinburgh Jesuit Church, SCIAF, Justice and Peace Scotland, Pax Christi, The Romero Trust, and Independent Catholic News.

Bishop Kenneth Nowakowski, of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, will invite us to consider 'Romero and Ukraine: Reslience in the Face of Injustice'.

Refreshments will be served afterwards. All welcome!

The event is free but all attendees must book in advance here.

University Challenge winner invites quiz teams to battle

Parishioners across the Archdiocese can battle a University Challenge champion this month – and help support a good cause.

Robbie Campbell Hewson was part of the Edinburgh University team that won the famous BBC programme this year, defeating St Edmund Hall, Oxford.

He’s now taking part in a quiz night at St Mary’s Star of the Sea Church in Constitution Street, Edinburgh, on 26th September.

Robbie, a parishioner at Sacred Heart Church in Lauriston, said: “I’ll be putting a team together for the night. I welcome people to come along, enjoy some friendly competition and help raise funds for a good cause.”

Money raised will go towards supporting Soulserve an Edinburgh-based Catholic initiative providing meals and support for people struggling with or recovering from addictions.

Soulserve will take place on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm in the Ogilvie Room at Sacred Heart Church, Lauriston Street, Edinburgh, and begins on 3 December.

Organiser Andrew Cassidy said: “By sharing a meal, hearing personal testimony from someone in recovery from addiction and by offering a simple prayer service we seek to be a haven and a resource to help those on the path to healing.”

Robbie, who graduated with a maths degree from Edinburgh University this year, still takes part in quiz nights in the city with his university team.

So does he trounce the opposition?

“We normally do quite well, but it depends on the quiz. We’re very bad at music rounds!”

Quiz Night, 7pm, Thursday 26th September, St Mary’s Star of the Sea, 106 Constitution Street, Edinburgh. For tickets (£5, including meal) email pastoral.lauriston@gmail.com or leith.pastoral.associate@gmail.com
