SUMMARY:A Tainted Legacy
DESCRIPTION:‘A Tainted Legacy’ expresses the situation confronting L’Arche across the world since the shameful double-life of its founder\, Jean Vanier\, was exposed in February 2020. \nFor an international network of 150 plus communities who were long content to bask in Vanier’s reflected glory\, the impact has felt ‘an overdue crash course in humility’. \nIt’s a painful issue too for the many individuals whose lives had been shaped by a man once considered a spiritual giant\, spoken of by some as a saint even within his lifetime. \nFor them\, grief has come twice over: first after Vanier’s natural death\, and then again\, a few months later\, after the death of his reputation. How does anyone begin to sift the wheat from the weeds? \nJim Cargin takes up the Edinburgh Newman Circle’s invitation to explore the issues thrown up by Vanier’s ambiguous legacy. What is a mature response to the messy human truth: the same man who\, through L’Arche as well as Faith and Light\, had done so much to revolutionize the way disability is seen in our world\,  had secretly betrayed the very values he publicly advocated.  \nJim Cargin will draw on the 860-page report by the independent commission which L’Arche set up\, published in 2023. He will outline the way that individuals have been responding to this crisis\, as well as the steps L’Arche has already taken – and is still taking – to face up to a dark chapter in its history. And the lessons for those churches with their own tainted legacies. \nJim Cargin joined L’Arche Highland in Inverness in 1980. Since then\, he has carried various leadership and support roles elsewhere in UK\, as well as in Poland\, Belgium and with the communications team for L’Arche International. \n\nA Tainted Legacy: A member of L’Arche reflects on the legacy of Jean Vanier\, six years on. Wednesday 24 June 2026\, 7:30PM – 9.00pm\, Newington Trinity Church\, 18 West Mayfield\, Edinburgh\, EH9 1TQ. Entry by donation (suggested £5). Event organised by The Newman Association Edinburgh Circle.

SUMMARY:Archdiocesan Lourdes Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:The annual Archdiocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place from Friday 10 – Friday 17 July 2026. \nThe pilgrimage is led by Archbishop Leo Cushley and is being organised with Tangney Tours. \nPilgrims come from all parts of the Archdiocese and include assisted pilgrims -those who are ill\, elderly or frail\, who are supported by our own team of willing volunteers\, including doctors\, nurses and other allied health professionals. \nFull details are at www.edinburgh-lourdes.com/lourdes-2026. \nAbout the Pilgrimage \nTangney Tours say: “During our pilgrimage\, there will be a lot to see and experience. Our pilgrimage and tour of Lourdes includes visits to the Basilica of the Rosary and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. We take part in the Masses\, the Stations of the Cross and the blessing of the sick\, visit the Grotto of Massabeille where the apparitions of Our Lady took place. \nYou will have the chance to drink from the spring at the base of the Grotto. The original spring that Bernadette located is still visible\, protected by a glass cover and illuminated. Visit the baths where hundreds of miraculous healings have taken place. \nWe participate in the evening torchlight processions which is a wonderful experience. Our Lady requested that these processions take place when She appeared to Bernadette. We will also offer a walking tour to the Boly Mill\, where Bernadette was born\, and to the Cachot\, an abandoned prison where Bernadette’s family lived. \nWe will see the hospice where Bernadette attended school and made her First Holy Communion. After the apparitions she also lived here until the age of twenty two\, when she went to Nevers to join the Sisters of Charity of Nevers.

SUMMARY:Music for the Homeless Jesus
