As we approach the month’s mind of the funeral of Canon Leo Glancy (Friday 11 September), we share this letter of condolence from Bishop Hilary Nanman Dachelem CMF, Bishop of Bauchi, Nigeria.
The letter pays tribute to Canon Leo’s missionary service in the Diocese of Bauchi and recalls the lasting legacy of his work there, particularly in Billiri and Gombe. It is a moving reminder of the strong bond between Bauchi and the Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh.

It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we, the Bishop, clergy, religious and faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Bauchi, received the news of the death of Canon Leo Glancy, who passed away on 23rd July, 2026 in Scotland.
On behalf of the Catholic Diocese of Bauchi, I extend our heartfelt condolences to you, the clergy, religious and faithful of the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh, as well as to the family, friends and loved ones of Canon Leo.
Canon Leo Glancy will remain fondly remembered in the Diocese of Bauchi for his years of dedicated pastoral service and missionary commitment.
During his time with us, he contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Church. In a particularly significant way, he was instrumental in the building and development of the Church in Billiri and St James Church in Gombe.
His dedication, generosity and commitment to the work of evangelisation have left a lasting legacy in the Diocese.
His ministry among us was a testimony to his love for God, the Church and the people entrusted to his pastoral care. The fruits of his labour continue to speak even after his departure from this earthly life.
As we mourn his passing, we give thanks to God for the gift of Canon Leo Clancy and for the years he spent serving the Church and our Diocese. We commend his soul to the merciful love of God, trusting in the promise of Christ that those who believe in Him shall have eternal life.
May the Lord Grant eternal rest to His faithful servant, Canon Leo Glancy, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May He console and strengthen his family, the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh, and all who mourn his passing.
Please be assured of our prayers and spiritual solidarity during this time of grief. We shall continue to remember Canon Leo in our Holy Masses and prayers.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
