St Gabriel’s celebrates Diamond Jubilee!

Congratulations to everyone at St Gabriel’s Church in Prestonpans, which marked the 60th anniversary of the opening of its present church on Sunday.

Archbishop Leo Cushley celebrated Mass with parish priest Fr Jinesh Mathew, before parishioners and guests gathered for a celebration buffet in the church hall.

The parish’s history stretches back to 1932, when it was established under the care of the Passionists at Drummohr.

The community later worshipped in St Gabriel’s Hall until the present church was opened by Cardinal Gordon Gray on Palm Sunday, 3 April 1966 (The foundation stone was laid by Cardinal Gray in August 1965).

Among the priests who helped shape parish life was Fr Edward Kennedy CP, who played a central role in bringing the new church to completion. Later clergy included Fr Brendan O’Boyle CP, Fr Frank Keevins CP and Fr Ralph Egan CP.

Now a Category B-listed building, St Gabriel’s is recognised as an important example of modern Scottish church architecture and continues to serve the Catholic community of Prestonpans and the surrounding area.

May God continue to bless the parish and all its people. Ad multos annos!
