Catholics across the Archdiocese are being encouraged to pray for missionaries and support communities in need as the Church marks the 100th World Mission Sunday this weekend (18 October).
This year’s theme, chosen by Pope Leo XIV, is One in Christ, United in Mission, highlighting the shared responsibility of Catholics worldwide to spread the Gospel and support those most in need.
Archbishop Leo Cushley has episcopal responsibility for Missio Scotland, helping to oversee and support its work on behalf of Scotland’s Catholic bishops. Fr Paul Lee (St Theresa’s, East Calder) is the Archdiocese’s representative for Missio Scotland.
In his message for World Mission Sunday, Pope Leo said: “Every gift, no matter how small, becomes a meaningful act of missionary communion.”
The annual special collection at Mass will support the Church’s missionary work across the world, including projects highlighted by Missio Scotland in Albania and Ukraine. You can also donate online here.
In Albania, donations will help Franciscan Sisters provide care and education for disadvantaged children, as well as supporting a refuge for homeless men.
In Ukraine, funds will help provide electricity generators for Catholic centres in Kharkiv, offering warmth, food and shelter to people affected by the ongoing war.
In his pastoral letter for World Mission Sunday, Fr Vincent Lockhart, National Director of Missio Scotland, writes: “Prayer is the first act of mission. Our financial gifts support the Church’s work; our prayers sustain its heart.”
Parishioners are encouraged to give generously at Mass this Sunday and to remember missionaries and the communities they serve in their prayers.
