Archbishop Cushley has sent a message of encouragement to children across the Archdiocese ahead of their Confirmation.

In a new video released today (Tuesday 09 March) he told them: "The Holy Spirit is God’s unique presence within us, and we usually reserve this Sacrament to the Bishop. So, normally, I would come to the parish and confirm each of you, and have a chance to meet you and your families.

"Unhappily, this year due to Covid and the restrictions...I have been obliged to delegate this to your parish priest and have asked him to confirm you instead.

"So, I’m very sorry not to be able to see you and to confirm you personally, but know that I’ll be praying for you as you are confirmed this year."

The video link is being emailed to schools today and has been posted on the Archdiocesan Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

My dear young friends, I’m pleased to have this chance to talk to you briefly about your upcoming Confirmation.

As you’ve been learning, the Sacrament of Confirmation is about the Gift of the Holy Spirit. It is a turning point in your Christian life too, as it will link you in a new and profound way to the Lord Jesus. 

This is because, when he rose from the dead, he gave his spirit to his Apostles, so that they would never forget him, but would always be touch with him in a permanent, loving bond for the rest of their lives.

The Holy Spirit is God’s unique presence within us, and we usually reserve this Sacrament to the Bishop.

So, normally, I would come to the parish and confirm each of you, and have a chance to meet you and your families. 

Unhappily, this year due to Covid and the restrictions it has placed upon how we get together, even in church, I have been obliged to delegate this to your parish priest and have asked him to confirm you instead. 

So, I’m very sorry not to be able to see you and to confirm you personally, but know that I’ll be praying for you as you are confirmed this year.  May God’s Holy Spirit come and dwell abundantly in your heart.  And as you mature into adults, may he always inspire you to be good citizens and brave and holy Christians.
