Archbishop Cushley celebrated Mass for pupils at St Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh this week as part of the Catholic Education Week celebrations.

He said: "Thank you for joining us to celebrate our wonderful Catholic schools.

"It's where we can pass down the faith to you and where you can learn the best of what we have to offer you so that you are well equipped for the future."

He added: "Prayer is an important part of your life so remember to pray for your family and friends while you are here."

Speaking to the Scottish Catholic Education Service, he praised the role of teachers: "When I visit schools, I can see they are truly Catholic.

"The ethos is tangible – in the way pupils behave, in the joy of prayer and worship, and in the faith teachers share.  It’s more than teaching; it’s a living witness.

"Teachers are leading initiatives like the Pope Francis Faith Award and Caritas.  They are guiding pupils not only in faith, but in service.

"More teachers are working towards the Catholic Teachers’ Certificate and RE qualifications.

"There’s a real desire to grow in knowledge and leadership, and many experienced teachers are mentoring the next generation of Catholic school leaders."
