Priests and parishioners gathered at St Margaret’s Chapel at The Gillis Centre, Edinburgh, to give thanks for the Gift of Life and to pray for the protection of the most vulnerable in our society.
The Mass took place on the Feast of St John, Apostle and Evangelist (Saturday 27 December).
In his homily, Archbishop Cushley reflected on the central Christian conviction that life itself comes from God.
Referring to the witness of St John, he reminded those present that “the Word who is life” stands at the very heart of the Christian faith.
Speaking of the challenges facing society today, the Archbishop noted that recent proposals at both the beginning and end of life cause deep concern, observing that “we need the help of heaven” as legislation increasingly moves “quite contrary to a Catholic Christian view of the human person and of what is good for society“.
Despite this, he encouraged hope and perseverance, highlighting the importance of public witness and shared responsibility.
He welcomed recent reminders of moral clarity in public life, particularly the call to “have a deep respect for all life“, and urged continued commitment to building a society marked by responsibility, integrity, and care for one another.
Thanking those involved in pro-life work across the Archdiocese, the he encouraged them “in spite of so much pressure to dismiss human life”, to continue proposing “a better way to do this” with charity and kindness.
After Mass, those gathered enjoyed food and refreshments together, sharing good company and conversation as the celebration continued.
